Papers include notes and correspondence (1801-1838) of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith, Elizabeth M. Pringle, W. Mason Smith, John Rutledge, Mr. and Mrs. Henry and John Izard Middleton and others concerning planting, Charleston, life in Philadelphia (Pa.), land in Chester District, Carolinians in New England and Canada, and smugglng goods from London. Correspondence (1846-1889) of Williams and Susan Middleton with, among others, many Middleton family members, Robert Bolton, J. Francis and Elizabeth Fisher, L. H. Petrie, and Jane Pringle, concerning schooling in Philadelphia and Newport (R.I.), plantation affairs at Middleton Place and elsewhere, travels, medical matters, the siege of Charleston (1863-1865), gardening, Confederate excavations at Middleton Place, and its destruction by Federal forces in 1865, efforts to restore Middleton Place, plans for post-war emigration, freedmen labor and contracts, family silver, portraits, and books stolen or destroyed by Federal soldiers, Henry Middleton's education and occupations, the growth of the phosphate industry in Charleston, and estate and financial problems. Also includes copies of Revolutionary period correspondence of Arthur Middleton, A. E. Burke, Edward Rutledge, Gen. Nathaniel Green, and others; copies of correspondence (1790-ca. 1810) of Drayton, Izard, and Manigault family members and others; correspondence (1797-1808) of Mary Middleton and Mrs. C.C. Pinckney; and correspondence (1820-ca. 1866) of Middletons and Fishers. The papers are calendared.

Arthur Middleton (June 26, 1742 – January 1, 1787) was a planter and politician from South Carolina. A Founding Father of the United States, he signed the United States Declaration of Independence.
